As the workplace evolves, the sacrosanct hierarchy of university degrees is slowly getting eroded in favour of skills. According to the World Economic Forum, degrees were seen as stamps on our professional passports that paved the way for our careers, implying that the nature of our work, along with the skills and knowledge required to execute it, remained unchanged for a lifetime. This is no longer true in the new economy, where technology is changing almost all jobs.

The rise of the digital economy and jobs powered by technical skills which can be acquired without spending years at University, has eroded the value of degrees in the new economy.

Skills are the currency of the new economy.

No two ways about it.

But as skills become more important, so does skill validation

What is skill validation?

An assessment of the skills you claim to have in order to judge your ability to perform a task, decide remuneration and career progression.

Why is skill validation important?

🔥 Positive reinforcement: Let’s start with you. Getting validation for your skills will build your self-confidence and enable you to pitch yourself using those skills.

🔥 Building relationships: The positivity created by validating your skills will make you a better team-player, and help you build meaningful relationships at work and increase your professional network.

🔥 Career progress: As university degrees lose their sacrosanct status, and skills increase in importance, water-tight validation of your skills will make it easier for others to trust your profile, and help you progress in your career.

How does one validate skills, without a degree (and even those need to be validated, if you aren’t from an elite group of universities recognised across the world) ?

🚀 Proof of work: Your work is often the best way to showcase your skills, and most recruiters are more interested in your experience than your formal education, making internships a very important part of student’s life. Even a short internship of a few weeks, a freelancing gig, a project or competition, or even voluntary work at an association is an excellent way to validate skills.

🚀 MOOCs: There are thousands of upskilling courses available on platforms like Udemey, Coursera, edX, and now even Google. These MOOCs are a popular way to acquire and validate new skills.

🚀 Social validation: Another popular way of validating skills is getting recommendations from colleagues and clients, either on LinkedIn or on freelancing platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, etc.

Is there a smarter way to validate skills?
